Origins

Toto's early history that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic expansion. In  토토 꽁머니  of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demand for new, modern urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, allowing greater efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm's market share in the world.

In the 90s, Toto began focusing on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve customers and boost profits. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and used the same methodology in its sales strategy. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction with the customer.

Toto has been able to continue to innovate with regard to toilet technology. The most recent toilet features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than typical models.

The company's first museum opened in the year 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution, its group companies (all having to do with ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even includes a bathroom with a WASHLET toilet as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before forming Toto members of the group did sessions for a variety of musicians. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums and was a more powerful, consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
